• I knew a simple soldier boy
• Who grinned at life in empty joy,
• Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
• And whistled early with the lark.

• He knew a young soldier whom was happy, smiled, enjoyed life, slept soundly at night, and whistled early in the morning.
• In the trenches durring winter its sad and crowded. There are exploding, crunching, and thudding noises and leeches and no alcohol. The young soldier committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
• No one talked about the young soldier who commited suicide after he killed himself.
• The crowds of people who smile and cheer for the soldiers when they passed by should hope to never know exactly how horrible the war is that all the people who used to be happy and young go into.
